My Latest Bookshelf Favorites: 5 Novels by Black Authors You Need to Read ASAP

As a Black millennial mom of two, finding time to read can be a bit of a challenge. But let me tell you, when I do get those precious moments to dive into a good book, I make it count. Recently, I've been absolutely captivated by novels penned by some incredibly talented Black female authors. These books are so good that I just had to share them with you. Trust me; you're going to want to add these to your reading list ASAP.

Black Cake - Charmaine Wilkerson

Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson

First up is "Black Cake" by Charmaine Wilkerson. This book is a family saga that takes you on a journey through time and space, all while unraveling a complex family secret. Being from a Caribbean background I related so many references in this book. The storytelling is so rich and layered that you'll feel like you're part of the family. And guess what? This book is so good that it's being developed into a HULU series! So, read it before it hits the screen.

All Her Little Secrets - Wanda M Morris

All Her Little Secrets by

Wanda M. Morris

Next is "All Her Little Secrets" by Wanda M. Morris. This one's a legal thriller with a twist. The protagonist, Ellice Littlejohn, seems to have it all but is harboring secrets that could ruin her. When her boss is found dead, she's thrown into a web of corporate deceit and danger. This book was a quick and enticing read and it had me on the edge of my seat!

The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris

The Other Black Girl

by Zakiya Dalila Harris

"The Other Black Girl" by Zakiya Dalila Harris is another must-read. It's a thought-provoking take on the complexities of being a Black woman in a predominantly white workspace. The tension builds up so subtly that you won't see the twist coming. Not going to lie, the ending threw me off a bit but the build up is still worth the read. And here's another fun fact: this one has been developed into a HULU series. Double win!

Black Girls Must Die Exhausted by Jayne Allen

Black Girls Must Die Exhausted

by Jayne Allen

"Black Girls Must Die Exhausted" by Jayne Allen is a relatable and heartfelt story that tackles some serious issues like infertility, aging parents, and the societal pressures Black women face. It's like having a deep conversation with a friend who gets it. This one started a tad bit slow for me but once it picked up I couldn't put it down. There are 2 other books in the series if you are curious about how the story ends.

The Sweetest Remedy by Jane Igharo

The Sweetest Remedy by Jane Igharo

Last but definitely not least is "The Sweetest Remedy" by Jane Igharo. This book is a beautiful blend of romance, family drama, and cultural exploration. When Hannah travels to Nigeria for her father's funeral, she discovers family she never knew she had and a culture she's eager to understand. It's a sweet and uplifting read that will leave you with a warm feeling inside. I’ve been loving Jane Igharo’s books because they focus so much on keeping the culture of where you are from alive, which is something I deal with on a daily basis so I relate tremendously.

So there you have it, my latest bookshelf favorites that you absolutely need to read. Each of these novels offers something unique, whether it's a gripping thriller, a family saga, or a heartfelt story of personal growth. And hey, if you're into watching adaptations, "The Other Black Girl" is already on HULU in the US and Disney+. You can also keep an eye out for "Black Cake" which is slated to premier in November on the same streaming platforms

Happy reading, friends!
