If you follow me on Instagram, you might’ve seen my recent reel where I borrowed a pasta maker from the Markham Public Library (yes, really!). I was flooded with DMs asking how that was even possible. So, I figured this was the perfect time to talk about some of the amazing and underrated services your local library offers — many of which can seriously save you money.

Whether you're in Markham, Toronto, or anywhere across the Greater Toronto Area, your local public library is more than just a place to check out books. It's a community-powered treasure trove of tools, tech, entertainment, and educational resources — all available for free with your library card.

Here are some of the top services you can take advantage of:

1. Toy Library

Why spend hundreds on toys that your kids will only use for a few weeks? Many public libraries have a Toy Library, where you can borrow puzzles, learning toys, building blocks, and more. Rotate toys without the cost or clutter.

2. Borrowing Video Games

Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360 — yes, you can borrow games for all of these platforms! It’s perfect for testing out a new game before committing, or just keeping your kids entertained over the weekend.

3. TV Shows & Movies on DVD

Binge classic series or watch the latest blockbusters without paying for another streaming service. Your library has a huge DVD collection — and often Blu-rays too.

4. Musical Instruments

Libraries like Markham and Toronto Public Library offer instruments you can borrow, from guitars and ukuleles to keyboards and more. A great option for beginners or anyone wanting to explore music on a budget.

5. Libby App for E-Books & Audiobooks

This is a must-download. The Libby app connects to your library account and lets you borrow thousands of ebooks and audiobooks right to your phone or tablet. All free, no late fees, and perfect for reading on the go.

6. The Lendery (Tools, Kitchen Appliances & More)

At places like the Aaniin Community Centre in Markham, you’ll find the Lendery — a program that lets you borrow items like drills, pressure cookers, camping gear, and yes, even pasta makers. Perfect for one-time use items you don’t want to buy.

7. Digital Media Tools (Cameras, Tripods, Mics & More)

Whether you’re starting a podcast, shooting a YouTube video, or capturing family memories, your library likely offers digital media kits that include cameras, mics, ring lights, and tripods.

8. Makerspace Access (3D Printers, Cricut Machines, Sewing Machines)

Markham Public LIbrary Makerspace

The Makerspace is a creative dreamland. Libraries like Markham Public Library offer public access to 3D printers, Cricut machines, sewing machines, green screen rooms, and more. You can even book studio time to record audio or shoot video.

9. Studio & Recording Spaces

Need a quiet place to record a podcast, take headshots, or edit content? Many libraries have bookable studio spaces equipped with the latest tech and software, all free to use with a library card.

Why This Matters

With the rising cost of everything, using your local library as a community resource just makes sense. Whether you're a content creator, parent, student, or just someone trying to live well without overspending, these free services are game changers.

And remember — while this blog highlights Markham Public Library, similar programs are available at:

Libraries aren’t just for readers — they’re for makers, creators, parents, gamers, and everyday folks looking to do more with less. So go ahead and explore everything your local library has to offer. Your wallet will thank you.

Let me know in the comments — have you ever borrowed something unexpected from the library?
